Summer’s just around the corner. In no time, your days will be filled with beach vacations, outdoor dinners, barbecues and fun in the sun. Your wardrobe will get more relaxed. You’ll work a little less. Life will be a little easier. But one area you shouldn’t relax is your skincare. During the warmer months, your sun exposure can triple. In case you haven’t heard, UV rays can do a number on your face bringing on everything from freckles and sun spots to premature wrinkles and damage. There’s nothing wrong with kicking back and enjoying a cold one in the sand. Just make sure you aren’t skipping an application of sunscreen.
If you remember nothing else about skincare this summer, remember to protect your skin from the sun. This isn’t about avoiding a nasty sunburn or embarrassing redness. This is about stopping the effects of aging or the long-term disaster that can result from improper coverage. When you’re young, those free days in the sun won’t make much of a difference. However, as you get a little older, your skin’s age will start to accelerate. If you want to avoid looking like a grandpa at 30, apply the sunscreen liberally. SPF 30 should do the trick.
Cleanse & Moisturize
These two activities should be the basis of every guy’s skincare regimen. They’re important year-round but especially in summer. More time outside means more dirt, sweat, dust and particle buildup. If you don’t wash your face twice daily, who knows what could happen? A morning and nighttime cleanse is a surefire way to get all the bad stuff off and reduce your chances of breakouts.
Additionally, be mindful of the type of cleanser you use. For example, guys with dry skin might use an oil cleanser during the colder months. But when the temperatures rise and the humidity increases, there’s less of a need for moisture assistance. Heavy cleansers or moisturizers can leave your skin feeling greasy during the summer months. If you don’t want to look like an oil slick this July, switch up your products for lighter alternatives.
Exfoliation gets a bad rap with men. It seems like one of those extra skincare tips that only women care about. But it’s important for guys, too. Especially in summer. With all that time in the sun, you’ve got a lot more than dead skin cells to remove. Your daily cleansing session is a good habit to practice but sometimes you need to dig deeper. Exfoliating with a gentle scrub or wipe at least once a week is a great way to double check yourself.
To simplify things, treat your skincare routine the opposite of the rest of your summer life. You’re relaxing your style, your diet and your work schedule. But to keep your skin in great shape, it’s time to turn up the heat in the bathroom. Don’t skip out on skincare this season. Your face will thank you later.
